The Enemy, Music For The People

What is expected when you meet your idols? To learn from them, and that is exactly what singer/guitarist Tom Clarke has done. After forming a band called The Enemy and releasing their smash debut “We’ll Live And Die In These Towns” Mr. Clarke proved you could play amazing music in the form of a three piece, write songs about life struggles, be angry, and not be a cunt while doing all this. Of course he had the amazing help by bassist Andy Hopkins and young drummer Liam Watts. Their record took the UK by storm and single after single was released.

But one thing was certain: they were lads, talented lads, but lads none the less. So upon meeting his idols Tom Meighan of Kasabian and the Gallagher brothers of Oasis, Mr. Clarke realized he’d have to grow with his music and his band. What’s an indication of that? The bands new single “No Time For Tears”. Upon hearing this song, a tingle of ear might sweep over your mind, will this be the same enemy I’ve come to love? Well gladly I can say they’re even better. And that’s because not only are they the same, but they have completely grown and learned from their idols. The confidence of Oasis and the boldness of Kasabian intertwine with their own style of music to bring in my opinion the best comeback single of 2009, and I can confidently say this despite it only being March. The song has more unique basslines and power hungry drum beats and bangs, but also has our nice Mr. Clarke more confident with his guitar. One amazing thing about it is that the song is clearly inspired by Oasis’s hit single “Morning Glory” but not in an annoying nagging sense. It is in a way that makes you proud to know that Tom Clarke is a talented and aware musician and a not a spiraling cunt like most popular musicians. For a band to trek new boundaries for their sophomore release despite all the expectations surrounding them is a feat to be commended. And I am certainly eagerly awaiting The Enemy’s upcoming album
